Tangkuban Perahu Bandung

Tangkuban Perahu Bandung – All about It!

Tangkuban Perahu Bandung is the closest active volcano to the city of Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java in Indonesia. The volcano, which is located at approximately 30 km north Bandung, has always been the number one tourist destination in Bandung. Its closeness to the city of Bandung and the beautiful scenery around it has made Tangkuban Perahu Bandung popular among both domestic and international tourists.

How to Get to Tangkuban Perahu in Bandung

The name “Tangkuban Perahu” can literally be translated as “upturned boat” in Sundanese, a local dialect in West Java, referring to the local legend telling a story about a failed romance between a son who has no idea that the woman he’s in love with is actually his own biological mother who has cast him away many years before for disobedience and who has gained the power of eternal youth from the gods.

The journey to Tangkuban Perahu Bandung takes about one-hour drive from the Bandung city. However on weekends, especially long weekends, it can take for hours just to reach Lembang, the closest district just before Tangkuban Perahu Bandung. Therefore it is highly suggested that we not go to Tangkuban Perahu on public holidays or weekends to avoid the traffic jam.

There are so many interesting things to see on the way to Tangkuban Perahu Bandung. For those who are adventurous enough and would like to try Bandung’s local special delicacy, you can try rabbit satay and rabbit curry. We can also drop by at Lembang, a district at northern part of Bandung which is famous for its fresh fruit and vegetable products, especially strawberries. Lembang is also popular for its dairy products, such as milk and yoghurt which is produced from the farms nearby.

Well, it sounds interesting, doesn’t it? So what can we do at the volcano then? The scenery up there is totally breathtaking, something that I’m sure you don’t want to miss! Take some lovely pictures at the volcano or by the craters.

Tangkuban Perahu Bandung – Some Useful Tips

I have some tips for you who plan to go to Tangkuban Perahu Bandung, just don’t forget to bring your sweaters and hats along. Applying sun block lotion just before you leave is also highly suggested to prevent sunburn. The air is cold on top of the volcano, making us unaware when the sun ray hits our skin.

Another tip for you is to beware of the seemingly helpful and friendly local guides at Tangkuban Perahu Bandung. Don’t hesitate to say ‘No’ so that they won’t follow you around and ask you for unbelievable sum of money at the end of the trip! Even if you do want to use a local guide, make sure that you are using an official local guide which can be obtained easily from the office at the volcano. Don’t forget to bargain, too. Usually they charge you around Rp 100,000 per hour. One local guide is enough for the whole of the group!

Last but not least, this tip is for those who are keen on shopping. Do not hesitate to bargain, especially at Tangkuban Perahu. If you are a foreigner, the local sellers could mark up the price up to 10 times more expensive, or even more. So you know what to do J. Well, I myself have no heart to crazily bargain the stuff I like, but usually if we just walk away and show the ‘no-interested face’, they would automatically reduce the price up to 75%, without our bargaining at all!
